Students will develop skills in speaking, reading, listening and writing and will study the following topics: describing information about themselves including name, age, birthdates, where they live; numbers, dates and telling the time; pets, family, physical and character descriptions; countries and nationalities; school and school subjects; holidays and weather; places in town and directions; food and drinks; clothing and colours; free time activities; jobs; environmental issues; giving opinions. The emphasis will be on developing students’ confidence in participating in short conversations, as well as enabling them to write short paragraphs about these topics using the present tense. Students will acquire a range of grammatical skills, such as knowledge of nouns and their gender, verbs and verb endings and will learn how to use a bi-lingual dictionary. As students develop their confidence and understanding of learning a language, they will develop their linguistic competence. They will learn to use more complex sentence structures and will be able to create longer paragraphs. Students will also learn how to describe events using the past and the future. Assessment Students’ work will be assessed regularly through classroom participation, homework and vocabulary tests. Formal assessment in all four language skills will be carried out twice per year and students will be assessed according to National Curriculum levels.
